The Shawarma

Updated: Nov 14, 2020

Did you know you can make this yummy comfort food in your own kitchen?

Hello, Chefs! We're back at it again with another comfort food recipe: the Shawarma.

This seemingly uncomplicated dish packs a ton of flavor and reminds me of hot summer days, when I had just met my better half and we drove together to the old part of our city, only to enjoy a fresh shawarma. The chicken would be cut in front of us directly from the vertical turning broiler, we'd get to choose our favorite toppings and then the giant pita would be wrapped in front of us - packing as much flavors as could fit in the tight wrap. And us, we'd get to enjoy it while watching the waves of the Black Sea roll to the shore, over and over again.

Here are some suggestions if you want some bonus points for your shawarma: * Eat it with a side salad - the shawarma itself does not have enough vegetables to make a balanced meal on its own. * Use a whole grain pita bread - for more fibre. * Pack it with fresh vegetables - the darker the color the more points you get. * Be generous with your chicken - after all, you need enough protein * Use hummus for your sauce or a mayo made with some healthy oils like olive oil, canola, avocado oil - for some extra unsaturated fats *Have pickles in moderation - as they are quite salty.
