Luck and Prosperity Salad

Updated: Jun 12, 2021

A gorgeous salad made with carefully selected ingredients, that are linked to good fortune in the Chinese culture.

It is no secret that the rich Chinese culture often links foods to blessings and deeper meanings. To people who have never lived there or even visited China, like myself, this is just another aspect that makes China even more interesting, more mysterious and more like something that it on my places-that-I-must-explore-one-day list.

This recipe was born out of the desire to add more vegetables to our Chinese Foods menu and since in our searches we could not find a traditional Chinese salad, we opted to explore the mysticism of Chinese food and bring together ingredients that have a benefic meaning.

Here are some of the foods that we used and some of their beautiful symbolisms:

  • Chinese cabbage, the base of our salad - luck and prosperity, 100 types of prosperity.

  • Tangerines and Oranges - luck, happiness, good fortune (just think of their golden color).

  • Jujubes (red dates) - wealth, prosperity, happiness.

  • Carrots and Red Bell Pepper - evoke good luck through their red color.

  • Soya/ Bean Sprouts are bringers of a good start into the new year, wishing for things to go smoothly.

We chose to make a cilantro (Chinese parsley) dressing for this salad, to tie it all together and the result was wonderfully delicious.
